Star Wars: The Main Characters & Their Harry Potter Counterpart (2024)

In today's modern pop culture zeitgeist, franchise properties are dominant worldwide, and many have become phenomenons. Two colossal examples of this are two franchises with a lot in common,Star Wars andHarry Potter, both of which have accumulated an incredible following over the years.

One thing thathas helped build both properties to the level of brilliancethat they have are the characters, with a handful being some of the most iconic in fictional history. When it comes to looking at similarities between the two franchises, look no further than the characters.

C-3Po - Dobby

Pairing C-3PO with aPottercharacter has a couple of options, with Neville standing out as a potential candidate; however, the best counterpart for the protocol droid is Dobby.

Both are loyal friends who are incredibly smart, who can be very annoying, who can talk a lot, and who are not always at the forefront but pop up when needed, so the two are incredibly similar.

R2-D2 - Hedwig

Sticking with the droids and onto the best friend of Threepio, R2-D2 is a character who does not get the credit he deserves for always being such a hero.

As the beloved companion of the protagonist, who is loyal, loving, intuitive, and smart, Artoo is theStar Warsversion of Hedwig, withboth having a special relationship with their companion and protecting them when needed.

Chewbacca - Rubeus Hagrid

Star Wars: The Main Characters & Their Harry Potter Counterpart (3)

Speaking of characters who do not get the credit they deserve, Chewbacca has been around the Galaxy for over two-hundred years, spending a lot of time caught up in the Clone Wars and Galactic Civil Wars as a loyal friend, sidekick, and warrior.

While not necessarily a prominent warrior, Hagrid is the natural counterpart to Chewbacca. Being big and hairy is the logical connection, but both have a lot of love to give to their friends, are very caring (see Chewbacca and the Porgs as well as Hagrid and his animals,) neither are hugely articulate, and both are beloved.

Kylo Ren - Draco Malfoy

Star Wars: The Main Characters & Their Harry Potter Counterpart (4)

TheStar Warssequel trilogy does not have many characters who perfectly match withPottercharacters, but one who does, particularly when comparing both in their mostemotionally unstabletime, is Kylo Ren with Draco Malfoy.

RELATED:

Both are emotional and cruel, with some significant father issues but a special connection with their mothers. Kylo is extremely torn in a similar fashion to Malfoy as the end of thePotterseries approaches, with both being angry and holding lots of pressure to live up to evil expectations.

Darth Sidious - Voldemort

Star Wars: The Main Characters & Their Harry Potter Counterpart (5)

Perhaps the most obvious pairing between the two franchises comes in the form of both of the franchise's central evil, the Emperor Darth Sidious and Lord Voldemort.

Both are draped in black with ghost-like white skin and physical scarring and deformities. In addition, the two are incredibly powerful, difficult to kill, massively feared and fearing very few, and have studied their separate dark arts to a great extent, having more knowledge on the subject than any other on their quest for domination and power.

Yoda/Obi-Wan Kenobi - Albus Dumbledore

Star Wars: The Main Characters & Their Harry Potter Counterpart (6)

Voldemort's opposite, Albus Dumbledore, is a bit harder to pair withaStar Warscharacter, as there are two prime candidates. In the original trilogy, it is more Obi-Wan, the powerful and wise mentor who hides a lot of crucial information and guides the hero.

However, when looking at theStar Warsfranchise as a whole, Yoda appears to fit Dumbledore better, fulfilling the above criteria, as well as being the most powerful of the Light Side, immensely mysterious, ancient with a murky past, and a wisdom far beyond any other. In addition, like Dumbledore to Voldemort, Yoda appears to be the only one who is feared by Sidious.

Darth Vader - Severus Snape

Going back to the evil side of things fromStar Wars, Darth Vader is the most iconic villain in pop culture and cinematic history, and perhaps the franchise's most layered and brilliant character.

Vader pairs perfectly with Snape, and not just because they are both right-hand men to the main baddie for so long, and clad head to toe in black. Both are tragic and often misunderstood, who, while having done awful things, ended up being redeemed, were obsessed with the woman they loved, and were haunted by their death.

Han Solo - Ron Weasley

Star Wars: The Main Characters & Their Harry Potter Counterpart (8)

There is an argument to be had that Ron Weasley, particularly in the movies, was more likeother characters, but, generally, Han Solo fits best with the Gryffindor.

Both are the snarky best friendof the main character, and one-third of the main protagonists for their set of movies, but are far from perfect. Han and Ron are insecure and emotionally vulnerable, as well as stubborn as can be, and arrogant at times. While generally nobody wants to be Ron and everybody wants to be the cool Han Solo, the two have a lot in common.

Leia Organa (or Padmé) - Hermione Granger

Star Wars: The Main Characters & Their Harry Potter Counterpart (9)

In the same vein as Dumbledore with Obi-Wan, Hermione Granger is typically paired with Leia Organa when talking about which character matches with who. Both are incredibly loyal companions to the main protagonist, who are strong, brave, intelligent leaders and who fall in love with the other third of the trio.

However, there is an argument to be had that Hermione is better suited to get paired with Padmé. Still holding all the qualities of Leia including falling in love with a central protagonist, Leia (in the original trilogy) is at the forefront of the action as a leader and General, Padmé only faces action when the situation calls for it. She is more of an intellectual, a diplomat, someone who wants to make a change, and is still incredibly loyal and devoted to the cause, willing to risk her life for it if needed.

Luke Skywalker - Harry Potter

Star Wars: The Main Characters & Their Harry Potter Counterpart (10)

The most obviousStar Wars-Harry Potterparallelsalongside Sidious and Voldemort, arguably more so, are between Luke Skywalker and Harry Potter.

Both are the central protagonist of their movies, who start off stuck in a life with their adoptive parents (their Aunt and Uncle) longing for more. The pair are eventually brought into a life where they become a powerful Jedi and Wizard, with both meeting their closest friends and arch-nemeses along the way, and find their place in their worlds with help from their mentors, friends, and found family, as they battle evil and attempt to end wars that rage on in their worlds. Both go ona heroic journey and have an incredible amount of similarities.
